The Open Tibia Server, abbreviated OTServ or just OT is the main project and the main focus of this site and wiki. Open Tibia Server is a server designed for use primarily with the Tibia client designed by CipSoft GmbH but alternative clients are in development, most notably Yet Another Tibia Client. The core sever application is rarely used for hosing game servers, instead modified versions, called distros are used. These are created and maintained by third party developers. The forking of distros is possible because of the license Open Tibia Server is released under the GNU General Public License. Examples of popular distros are The Forgotten Server, Devland, Evolutions and Armoni.

Controversy

Some debate over whether it is legal to run a OTServ has arisen over the years, but since nothing illegal is used in the development of OTServ, the public opinion is that the use of OTServ is legal. Using the Tibia client however may violate the end-user license agreement of the Tibia client. The use of the Tibia client to connect to OTServ is neither supported nor endorsed by CipSoft. Stating something related to Open Tibia in the game Tibia is however illegal according to their Tibia Rules.
